I told ya I love an underdog story. The Brit who was four months ago on the brink of not being behind an F1 wheel when his team Honda pull out of the Championship, is now the toast of Melbourne.
Jensen Button succeeded in his second ever F1 victory in 154 attempts in seven years.
He claims the spoils of today’s Australian Grand Prix from an excellent starting grid position which he tops the pole yesterday, winning it with team-mate Rubens Barrichello close behind in second position.
The rookie BrawnGP team is making an impressive debut for the Formula Season, where it tops the Constructor with 18 points, some 12 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with Ferrari nowhere in sight.
Button had a perfect race from the start till the end. After taking the lead from the No.1 grid position, he never looked back.
The 29 year old added, “I just hope we can now continue this way. I know we are going to fight to keep the car competitive and at the front. But this is where we deserve to be, so bring on Malaysia.”
Unlike Button, Barrichello however had some problems on the first few turns from the flag-off, where he had a bad start and dropped a few position, but he came back strong after some bumping with two cars, and a late pit stop before completing his runners-up finish.
Barrichello mentioned, “I never thought I could finish on the podium after the start. I hit anti-stall, so the car went into neutral and I recovered quite quickly. I was hit from behind by a McLaren and that put me sideways and I hit someone really hard and I thought the car was done after that, but it survived.”
